Due to the unconditional love, loyalty, affectionate ways and protectiveness a dog shows its family, it is considered as man’s best friend. Giving the dog a massage is one of the ways by which an owner can repay the pet for all the wonderful things it has given. A dog is a social animal that would love to be petted and to receive attention from its master. Similar to the effects of massage to humans, dogs would get loads of benefits from massage too.

The therapeutic benefits of a dog massage have helped a lot of dogs with various medical conditions. This kind of deep massage though is best conducted by well trained massage therapist using a variety of techniques. Nonetheless a short daily massage session can improve the flexibility and reduce joint and muscle pains associated with aging.

Massage can greatly benefit physically and emotionally stressed dogs. The comforting touch of an owner’s hands calms a highly dog stressed dog during a thunderstorm or during a 4th of July fireworks display. Massaging the dog is a great way to establish pet-owner and pet friendship.

A good massage that will pamper the pet can be learned easily . In spite of the fact that dogs love to be petted, other individuals not accustomed to being touched would not enjoy a massage. Dogs that hate to be petted and touched are mostly mature dogs adopted from animal shelters. To massage a small dog, you simply let the pet lie in your lap. To massage a large dog, you have to make the pet lie in a firm well padded surface like a couch or a padded table. Give the dog soft slow strokes from the head to the tail. Gently scratch the area behind the dog’s ears and apply light pressure on the cheeks, chin and on the area between the eyes.

Use the hell of the hand to make circular motion on the neck of large dogs. With the same circular motion but with a little more pressure, move the heel of the hand to the shoulders and chest of the dog. In smaller dogs, use three fingers and follow the same path. Be sure to follow the hair growth direction so as not to cause the dog discomfort. The inner side of the legs can be stroked against the direction of hair growth.
